Has Minecraft On Playstation 3 Proved Microsoft Were Right

Microsoft have been through the wringer in the past 12 months and rightly so for the PR disaster that was the Xbox One Launch.

Digital Downloads are a medium that Microsoft were telling people that was going to be the dominant force in this generation of consoles.

Sony’s Reply was that gamers did not want to rely on digital content and wanted boxed games to stay, but were Microsoft only announcing the dawn of the next generation, if they were they blew that message up and got their fingers burned.

BUT PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, and Steam, all provide the signs that digital downloadable content is acceptable to millions of gamers.

Just now this may not be the way gamers want to buy AAA titles,  just look at Spider-Man on Xbox One, sales of the latest web slinging vigilante were largely unaffected this week. But it is totally acceptable to invest in digital only games.

minecraft ps3

Minecraft for PlayStation 3 has sold in buckets on week 1. It still sells in large volumes on Xbox and by downloading it on PC as well. This game is the proof that small budget games need an outlet.

People will say that games from a box are the one and only way to play video games. Others will say its great to have both. Indies believe this a fantastic way for low budget games can see the light of day.

AND finally Remember that Minecraft started life like this.

Most game players still insist that Sony have kept to their E3 2013 promises. Well that is true, PlayStation 4 continues to sell units that Microsoft can only dream of at the moment. But has the amount of digital releases on PlayStation platforms, (Vita, PS3, and PS4), proven to most that Digital Downloads are the way forward.

How many Indie publishers are making games for Playstation 4? 1000 and that is a list that will continue to grow.

How many of them produce boxed products? Xbox Players would hazard a guess that 99.9% do.

The list of games includes the new stream service, but are gamers now wise to the benefits of Digital gaming?

we think this may take a bit more time to see the full facts and results.

Here is the Charts for this week

It’s FIFA’s turn to edge out ‘Titanfall’ this week as FIFA 14 returns to No 1 for a 12th week.

It’s a record number of weeks at No1 for a FIFA title, beating the 11 weeks set by  FIFA: Road to the World Cup 98 .

Titanfall slips one place to No2, only a few hundred sales behind.

Sony’s  Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition  debuts at No3, one place ahead of Microsoft’s longer-serving  Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition  which holds on to No4, having been in the Top 10 all year.

There are also non-movers at No’s 5 and 6 with  2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil  and  Call of Duty: Ghosts , while The Amazing Spider-Man 2  falls from No3 to No7 despite the Xbox One version new out this week.

The Lego Movie Videogame remains the biggest selling Lego game this week at No8 ahead of familiar faces  Battlefield 4  at No9 and  Grand Theft Auto V at No10.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe  enters the Top 40 at No16, while a retailer promotion helps  Terraria  re-enter at No24.

Another retailer promotion pushes  Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2  back into the Top 40 at No35.

7 Comments on Has Minecraft On Playstation 3 Proved Microsoft Were Right

  1. The difference is being told by Microsoft to “Deal with it” whether your ready or not if you want our console you need to accept the future is here and we are bringing it to you. My answer would be to instantly buy a PS4 with that type of attitude. Microsoft’s message was messed up and not very well prepared. They should have used reverse psychology and allow us to think it was all our idea because in fact it actually is going to be all our idea. If it isn’t we will spend our money elsewhere. And then what does Microsoft have at that point? Nothing but a doorstop with no games and no future.

Apparently the author of this article had no idea about the PSPgo and that Sony were one of the biggest pushers for Digital, way before microsoft. Coming from an xbox site, the title of this article and its premise are poorly objectified to fanboyism. How is anything in this article prove “microsoft” to be right? If anything Steam is more so right. Sony after that.

    • Glad you debated it sensibly.

The title is a question not an answer. The focus is also on what sony had to say regarding physical.

And seriously psp was so flawed it was virtually un playable at times due to slow broadband speeds.

This is why the article was done

      Great comments thanks for contrabuting

  3. Its about which of the two versions will sell more is about giving consumers choice in what version they want to buy. Microsoft where not going to give choice until forced into so the answer to your statement is they were wrong and sony was right.

  5. there is no doubt that digital downloads is the way forward and I agree with the first comment that shitty PR from MS in the off put them in a back down position.
Now all platforms are begining to explore how this can work the best for them.
It would not surprise me if in the coming year MS and Sony both take twists in their digital offering and pricing to try and broaden the market and make it more appealing. I mean who wants to pay £55 digitally when I can go into Game and buy the same product for just £25 and still get trade in for it in two weeks time once Im done with it!
